Image of 2017 CDTC Candidates MalaysiaWhat do PADI® CDTC candidates do when they’re not in a classroom or in the pool? They help protect the ocean!

The PADI Course Director Training Course (CDTC) is the highest achievable level of training within the PADI system. This week, once again, an elite group of PADI Master Instructors, from varied backgrounds and cultures, have gathered in Malaysia, after a thorough selection process, to take part in an extensive programme of developmental work and to earn the prestigious rating of PADI Course Director.

Despite a very busy schedule of workshops and presentations, and very limited opportunities to think about anything else but the training course, CDTC candidates from one particular group, the “Scuba Minions” virtual Dive Centre, did manage to find some time to conduct a beach clean-up when they visited the open water training site in Malaysia today. Appalled at the amount of plastic debris on the beach, they collected two large bin bags full of rubbish.

“It’s great to see these future dive industry leaders caring so much for the environment in which we all love to work” commented Micky Thomas, Spanish Translator at the 2017 CDTC in Malaysia.

Check out their Facebook page here: for more info on what they have been up to!

Many thanks to the Scuba Minions team from all of us at Project AWARE and best of luck with the rest of the course to all the candidates!

PADI Wins TAUCHEN Award for Best Diver Training Organisation

For the 19th consecutive year, PADI has been awarded the prestigious TAUCHEN Award for Best Diver Training Organisation. The popular German-language magazine, which focuses on topics of interest to European divers including dive travel, equipment and industry news, asks readers to annually select their preferences in 17 different industry categories. PADI has been the enduring favourite, taking home the coveted bronze statuette for the Best Diver Training Organisation every year since its inception.

This award is a tribute to the excellence of PADI Members around the world and the quality training they deliver every day.

PADI Members have plenty to celebrate, because the TAUCHEN Awards are often referred to as the ‘Oscars of the Dive Industry.’ This year, the awards were presented on 27 January, 2017 at the Düsseldorf Night Residency in conjunction with the BOOT Trade Show in Düsseldorf, Germany.

“I’d like to dedicate this award to PADI Members everywhere and thank them for their continued support of the PADI organisation. Thanks also for your expert diver training, contribution to diver safety and outreach. Together, we are the way the world learns to dive.”

– Mark Spiers, Vice President of Training, Sales and Field Services for PADI Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Congratulations Dive Centre Ltd – 30 years as a PADI Dive Shop.

Only one dive centre can say that they are New Zealand’s longest standing dive shop, and it is Dive Centre Ltd, run by the Kidd Family since 1972.  Recently, they also celebrated 30 years as a PADI Dive Centre.

It was Guy’s background as an ex-operational dive team member of the Royal NZ Navy that prompted him and his wife Margaret to open Dive Centre Ltd to offer dive equipment to the public.

Since their humble beginnings, Dive Centre Ltd has grown to be a PADI 5 Star IDC Centre, a TecRec Centre, IANZ Testing Station and an Aqualung Partner Centre.

In September 2000, Guy took a step back and moved into retirement, while his son Malcolm stepped in to continue running the business with Margaret. Malcolm, always destined to be a diver, has vivid memories of his early days in the water, “My very first memory is of my first snorkel at the Poor Knights Island at age 5 – I squealed the entire time through my snorkel!”

img_0176(R-L) PADI Territory Director Thomas Knedlick, Margaret, Malcom & Guy Kidd, and PADI Regional Manager Jen Clent

Of course, in the diving industry no two days are the same and Malcolm shared with us some of his favourite moments,

“We were diving at Goat Island Marine reserve – I was teaching an Open Water course, and an orca came up very close to us. Another memory is salvaging a sunken boat on the Coromandel and using a helicopter to tow it back to shore – but more than anything, it’s the people that I’ve introduced to diving that I remember. Over the years, some great customer relationships have formed and grown into great friendships.”

So what’s his advice for running a successful dive shop like Dive Centre Ltd?

“You have to have a passion for the sport, a head for business and a strong work ethic. And most of all, love people! That’s what it’s all about.”

Congratulations to Malcom, Margaret and Guy, and of course the entire team at Dive Centre Ltd for the huge achievement that is 30 years as a PADI Dive shop and 45 years in the diving industry.
